Department of English Literature and Languages

The Department of English Language and Literature at Renaissance College offers exciting and challenging graduate and postgraduate studies in English in all principal areas from the medieval period to the 21st century. Students encounter a mix of traditional and innovative subjects and approaches, ranging from the most famous names in English literature to newer looks at various aspects of popular culture. The Department specializes in a wide variety of subjects, including Classic and Modern Poetry, Drama, Novel, Prose, Greek Literature, American Literature, Contemporary Ages, Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, Scholarly Editing, and Literary History.

Besides this, students are offered certain internationally recognized English Language courses like Linguistics, IELTS, TOEFL (For information on English Language Courses see the relevant brochure). Studies in Literature and Language are offered both at Graduate and Postgraduate levels.

Through the writing of analytical and research essays, students acquire many of the skills in high demand in business, government, and the professions: how to research effectively, to organize and assemble materials, to define problems and propose solutions, to make oral presentations and use persuasive rhetoric. A degree in English is a stepping-stone to further professional training in journalism, library sciences, law, social work, CSS, PCS exams and so on. The teaching profession is one of the most popular choices for students of English Literature and Language.

How do I apply?
All candidates must submit a Renaissance College Admission Application Form before fifteen days of the commencement of course. Depending on your chosen degree subject, you may have to submit some written work and/or take a short test if you are invited to come to interview.

Interviews

Many students worry about the prospect of interviews, but there is no reason to be apprehensive.

Interviews should be regarded as a subject-specific discussion with a person who could be your future college tutor, who wants to explore your understanding of and commitment to your chosen degree subject. Tutors will want to see you do your best and will want you to be yourself and have confidence in your abilities. Interviewers are not trying to make you feel ignorant or to catch you out. They want to know how well you can explain what you do know, and whether you can think your way through a new problem. How you think is more important than what you know.

You should be prepared to show some background knowledge of your subject, though you will not be expected to have any detailed or technical knowledge. You must have good English. You may be asked what role your subject plays in society and how you came to be interested in it.

In some subjects you may be given some material immediately before the interview - concentrate on reading it very carefully rather than on guessing what the questions might be. If you are asked a factual question about which you know nothing or which you haven't considered before, don't panic. You can say honestly that you haven't covered that topic or that you haven't read much about that.

Written tests

In some subjects you are required to sit for a written test, either prior to your interview.

The courses

Renaissance College offers a wide range of courses: all have a core element while also allowing plenty of scope to follow your own areas of interest. No matter which University you choose, the course will be strictly in relevance to the university or institution you choose, as the University organizes main examinations. The range of courses offered by Renaissance College are relevant to the syllabi set by University of the Punjab, Islamia University, Bahawalpur, Zakria University, Multan and other universities.

Your choice of degree is the most important decision when applying for university and you should make sure that Renaissance College will offer you the most appropriate course and the method of teaching that best suits you as an individual.

The Renaissance College also offers part-time Undergraduate Certificates (including Foundation Certificates), Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas in English Language.

How many exams are there?

Students at Renaissance College are normally examined four times, weekly or fortnightly tests notwithstanding: preliminary examinations are taken within the first three months and must be passed in order to continue the course, but do not count towards the degree. The second and third set of examinations is held after every six weeks, fourth set of examinations (usually called the Final) takes place in your last term. Examination consists of several papers lasting three hours, which you sit within a two-week period. For some subjects, such as Modern Languages and Linguistics, there is an additional oral exam. In some courses one or two exams can be replaced by a thesis and/or some extended pieces of written work or essay, which will make up part of the final grade.

Student at Renaissance

There is no 'Renaissance Type'. Renaissance students come from all kinds of schools, backgrounds and institutes and all candidates are considered on the basis of their own individual merits and potential, making it impossible to define a 'typical' student. Common to all are commitment, enthusiasm and motivation for their chosen area of study, backed by a strong academic record. Students at Renaissance work hard, but they all enjoy the opportunity to pursue other interests outside their course. No tutor thinks that you should work non-stop. Renaissance offers plenty of opportunities to take up new sports, join societies, take part in the rich cultural and social life, or simply enjoy time with your friends in the college society, writer's guild and so on.
